Mallorca 312: Routes, Dates & Your Race Bike
The Mallorca 312 is the biggest cycling event on the island and one of the most famous gran fondos in Europe. Every spring — traditionally on the last Saturday of April — thousands of riders from all over the world line up in Playa de Muro to take on up to 312 kilometres of closed roads around Mallorca. If it is on your bucket list, this guide covers the routes, the key dates and the smartest way to sort out your race bike rental.
What is the Mallorca 312?
Born in 2010, the Mallorca 312 has grown into a sell-out event with around 8,000 participants and a unique promise: a full day of riding on roads closed to traffic. The start and finish are in Playa de Muro on the bay of Alcúdia, and the long route takes in the complete Serra de Tramuntana — the same climbs the professional teams use for their winter training camps.
The Three Routes
312 km — the full island experience
Roughly 5,000 metres of climbing and a 14-hour time limit. The route crosses the entire Tramuntana range — including the climbs around Lluc, Coll de Femenia and Coll de sa Batalla — before looping through the flat east and south of the island back to Playa de Muro. A serious challenge that rewards months of preparation.
225 km — the mountain classic
All of the Tramuntana drama with around 3,900 metres of climbing, skipping the long flat eastern loop. For many riders this is the sweet spot: every famous climb, one unforgettable day.
167 km — the accessible epic
Around 2,500 metres of climbing and the same closed-road atmosphere. Ideal if it is your first gran fondo or you simply want to enjoy the island rather than race it.
Key Dates & Entry
The event takes place in late April each year and entries open the previous spring — and sell out fast, often within days for the popular categories. Check the official mallorca312.com for the exact date and registration windows. Book your accommodation in the Playa de Muro – Alcúdia – Can Picafort area early: race week fills the north coast completely.
Rent Your Race Bike — Delivered to Your Hotel
Flying with a bike box is stressful in race week — and a rental upgrade can even be faster than your own bike. At Doctor Bicycles we rent the Specialized Tarmac SL8 and Wilier Filante SL with Shimano Ultegra Di2 and carbon wheels, professionally fitted to your measurements — bring your saddle height and we set the bike up race-ready.
Most importantly for the 312: we deliver the bike directly to your hotel in Playa de Muro , Alcúdia , Can Picafort or Port de Pollença — usually the evening before, so you can spin your legs on race eve and start with a machine you already trust. Check live availability and reserve early: race week is our busiest delivery week of the year.
Training on the Island Before the Event
Arriving a few days early? Ride the key sections at an easy pace: the Coll de Femenia from the north, the run through Lluc, and the final rolling kilometres along the bay. You will find profiles, photos and GPX files for every climb in our climbs database — free with every rental.
Practical Tips for Race Week
Carry two bottles and use the feed stations — April can already be hot. Check your gearing: a compact crankset with an 11-30 or 11-34 cassette is the sensible choice for the Tramuntana (all our rental bikes are set up this way). Respect the time cuts on the 312, and above all: look up from your stem once in a while — closed roads through the Tramuntana are something you will remember for the rest of your life.
