Paguera's coastal beast: MA-10 plus ultra-steep climbs from Port Valldemossa & Canonge. Experts only! More Description Discussion0 Warning: This 112 km route from Doctor Bicycles in Paguera is an exceptionally demanding challenge, targeted at expert cyclists who relish ultra-steep gradients and have excellent bike handling skills. It combines the stunning MA-10 coastal road with two notoriously brutal descents and ascents to remote ports, accumulating around 2450 meters of climbing. Route Highlights: The MA-10 West (Paguera to Banyalbufar): The ride begins by heading west from Paguera to Andratx, then joining the spectacular MA-10 coastal highway. You'll traverse the beautiful and undulating sections through the charming villages of Estellencs and Banyalbufar, enjoying classic Tramuntana scenery. Detour 1: The Port des Canonge Plunge: The first major test arrives with the detour to Port des Canonge. A narrow, winding, and very steep road plunges down to this tiny, secluded fishing hamlet. What goes down must come up, and the grueling climb back to the main road will demand your full attention and effort. Detour 2: The Infamous Port Valldemossa: Prepare for an even tougher challenge with the descent to Port Valldemossa. This incredibly narrow, twisting road boasts some of the steepest sustained gradients in Mallorca, requiring utmost caution on the way down. The subsequent climb back up to the historic town of Valldemossa is a true leg-breaker, a relentless ascent demanding immense power and the lowest possible gears. Valldemossa and the Inland Return: After conquering the port, you'll reach the beautiful town of Valldemossa itself. From here, the route turns inland, passing through Esporles and Establiments, offering a change of scenery as you generally descend towards the flatter plains near Palma. The final leg loops you back west through Calvià and Es Capdellà for the home stretch to Paguera. Useful Information: Difficulty: Extreme. This route features exceptionally steep and sustained climbs, particularly out of the two ports. It is suitable only for very fit, experienced cyclists who are confident climbers and descenders. Terrain: 100% asphalt. Extreme caution is required on the narrow, steep, and technical roads to and from Port des Canonge and Port Valldemossa. What to bring: A bike with the lowest possible gearing (e.g., compact chainset with a large cassette like 32T or 34T) is highly recommended. Excellent brakes are crucial. Also, bring ample nutrition and hydration, spares, and a strong dose of mental fortitude. Refreshments: Available in Andratx, Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Valldemossa town, Esporles, and Calvià. Assume no services are available at Port des Canonge or Port Valldemossa themselves. Highlights: The breathtaking scenery of the MA-10, the savage beauty and immense challenge of the Port des Canonge and Port Valldemossa climbs, and the historic charm of Valldemossa town. This route is a unique Mallorcan beast, offering immense satisfaction for those who conquer its formidable climbs. It’s a true test of climbing prowess, descending skill, and mental toughness. Ensure you select a bike with suitable gearing from Doctor Bicycles for this unforgettable and brutal challenge.
