Bike Rental Insurance in Mallorca: What’s Covered & What to Buy
Renting a bike in Mallorca and wondering what happens if it gets damaged or stolen? Short answer: bike rentals are not insurance companies — across the island, the renter is responsible for the bike, usually regardless of who caused the damage, exactly like a hire car. This guide explains how liability works, what a damage waiver does, and what your own travel insurance should cover before you fly.
Does a rental bike come with insurance?
No — and not just with us. We compared the terms of twenty Mallorca rental operators: none of them includes insurance in the rental price, and none covers theft. The standard model island-wide is a refundable security deposit plus liability for damage up to the bike’s value. The differences are in transparency: at Doctor Bicycles the whole model is published openly in our rental conditions — deposit from 100 € by bike category, liability capped at the bike value stated in your contract, and clear exclusions (normal wear and tear, pre-existing defects, force majeure are never your problem).
Damage Protection — the rental world’s answer to insurance
What car-hire companies call a collision damage waiver exists for bikes too. Our Damage Protection costs 6 € per bike per day (8 € for bikes with carbon wheels) and is charged for at most 5 days per rental — with it, your liability for damage is capped at the security deposit. Crash the bike descending Sa Calobra and the most you can lose is your deposit, not the price of a carbon frame. It is a contractual liability cap rather than an insurance policy, and it does not cover theft, gross negligence or riding on unpaved roads — you can add it in two clicks when booking your bike .
What your travel insurance should cover
Since rentals cannot sell you insurance, the policy that matters is the one you bring from home. Before your trip, check that your travel (or specialist cycling) insurance includes: damage and theft of rented sports equipment — many standard policies exclude rented gear, so this is the single most important line to verify; personal liability for damage you might cause to other people; medical cover for sports, since some insurers class road cycling as an activity that needs an add-on; and ideally roadside assistance for cyclists, which covers transport back if a breakdown or crash ends your ride.
If a car causes the crash
Spain’s compulsory motor insurance covers damage a vehicle causes to cyclists — including damage to a rented bike. Call the police so an official report (atestado) is drawn up and note the plate. You settle the bike damage with the rental first, and a good rental then helps you recover it: at Doctor Bicycles we assign our claim against the driver to you (cesión de derechos) and hand over every document the insurer needs — damage assessment, receipts and a step-by-step claim guide. To our knowledge, no other rental on the island offers this.
Theft
Theft is excluded by every rental on Mallorca, so prevention and paperwork are everything: always use the lock we provide, report a theft to the police immediately, and keep the broken lock — it is key evidence for the police report and for your own insurance claim. If your travel policy covers theft of rented equipment, this documentation is exactly what it will ask for.
Your 5-point checklist before you fly
1) Read the rental’s conditions — if they are not published, that tells you something. 2) Check your travel insurance covers rented sports equipment. 3) Add Damage Protection if you want a fixed worst case. 4) Photograph the bike at handover. 5) Save the rental’s phone number — after any crash, stop and call before riding on.
